KENAY, victim of its own innocence

This adorable little one has had to have an emergency surgery due to his critical condition. While he was playing with his toys at home he swallowed 2 bottle nipples from his human baby mate, what's cause Kenay to be in the brink of death.

Before we continue with Kenay's story we would like to make a very important reflection: we know that nowadays the huge amount of abandonments and the over population of pets makes us to want to help them all, without realising that an animal implies a lot of costs, we think that just with water and food is enough, but that is not the case. The same way that when someone decides to have a child and not only things about feeding them for their first 18 years, they also think about what clothes they'll wear, what schools they'll attend, which college they'll go to, what books they'll need, what toys will they ask for, etc... the very same will happen with our pets.

It's an innocent life and completely dependent on us, maybe we are lucky and this doggie or kitty will only need food, their annual vaccines and little more, but the reality is highly unlikely, they can always suffer accidents: a little distraction and they escape and are run over, that meeting another dog that attacks them and causes them injuries, that without realising they eat something that they shouldn't and it gets stuck in their gut... like it has happened to little Kenay.

These accidents are not cheap to solve, public health care for pets DOESN'T exist, to this day, vets care is private, what implies a major expense that the family will have suddenly have to take on to be able to tend to and save their pet's life. The solution is not that the private clinics lower their prices, since keeping a clinic open involves a lot of costs, the drugs the clinics buy are expensive and so is the equipment required to carry out their health services... so people can't constantly be asking for discounts or more affordable prices, it's not so easy; sometimes clinics don't have the margins to allow them to do that. What we need to remember is that: having a pet involves many expenses and we need to consider this when we decide to become responsible for one.

Life takes many turns and when we adopt a doggie or kitten with the intention to help them, it might be that at the time we do have the finances to cover unexpected expenses, but further down the line the situation may change, that's understandable... but the truth is that we find many cases of dogs that have just been rescued or adopted that suffer accidents like that and their families can't take care of the expenses that implies so the dog was adopted without the resources required to look after him/her.

Kenay is just a puppy, he was rescued few weeks ago by a family without financial resources, they just wanted to help the puppy and to give a friend to their small child, but adopting without being financially solver is not right, even if you have the best intentions, because it will be the pet that will pay for our eagerness to help without thinking it through.

Kenay suffered one of these accident, where the family could pay for the first vets visit but couldn't pay for the required surgery... he was in a serious condition for two days at home without knowing what to do with him... dying, suffering... until they brought him to Sara to leave him here and so that we could save his life and look for a new home if he survived.

We wonder, what would happen if our shelter didn't exist? and if shelters weren't able to help so many animals? what would have happened to Kenay? He would have been left to die with great suffering due to our eagerness to rescue without being able to provide for them. Please, let's think long and hard when we adopt an animal, it will be our responsibility for many years, many accidents and costs may happen during those years, we can not expect that Charities deal with this responsibility, when we adopt, let's do it responsibly.

Kenay arrived to Sara in a very critical state, he couldn't even get up, poor mite... the only thing achieved by leaving an animal without vet care during days is that the poor animal suffers a lot and that his probabilities of dying increase.

This puppy arrived in the middle of Easter when our vet was out of the island so we quickly called an external vet that could tent to poor Kenay's emergency and carry out the surgery immediately. From Sara we want to thank the vet Daniel López bit time for his disposition to help ALWAYS, any time, any place and for being so professional, thanks to him Kenay... IS STILL ALIVE!

Kenay's surgery starts and he is connected to a monitor to keep an eye on his vital signs so we don't have any "surprises":

When the vet saw Kenay's guts he could verify the massive obstructions due to the two bottle nipples, which you can perfectly see how they are extracted in the next image:

Once the foreign bodies are extracted, the gut is stitched back and it will heal bit:

A delicate surgery, even more for such a young doggies and in such a critical state, now it's a waiting game, keep him under observation around the clock and hope that we have arrived on time to save his life.

Kenay after the surgery, resting to build up his strenght:

The first 24h will be critical, we will know if we managed to save his life or, unfortunately, it was too late. We will concentrate all of our efforts in looking after him, pampering him, doing the impossible for him without having false hopes, we know that when they are so young the recover is very complicated :(

But we won't leave you having hihi. Those critical 24h have passed and Kenay IS STANDING! and he is HUNGRY! The surgery couldn't have gone any better! And although we don't want to say it too loud because it is still early, but we believe that Kenay is out of the woods! He will be able to grow up and have a brand new life!!

You can he here the little one having HIS FIRST MEAL after the surgery :)

Keep fighting, buddy!
